Watchmaker tools on a workshop bench

Why Saujana Jam

The Advantages of Choosing a Specialist Workshop

Not all watch repair is the same. What happens inside the workshop — how carefully, and by whom — shapes how long the results last.

Overview

Six Reasons Clients Return to Saujana Jam

Each of these reflects something we've chosen to do carefully — and consistently — rather than efficiently at the expense of quality.

Specialist Expertise

Our watchmakers work exclusively on mechanical and automatic calibres — not electronics, not general jewellery. This focus translates directly into depth of knowledge on the movements we handle.

Structured Process

Intake, assessment, disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication, reassembly, regulation, rate observation — each step is followed in sequence. None are combined or skipped to save time.

Professional-Grade Equipment

Ultrasonic cleaning units, binocular microscopes, multi-position timing machines, and pressure testing equipment — tools that allow us to work to the standard the pieces deserve.

Open Communication

We speak plainly with clients about condition, options, and cost. On conservation pieces, we consult before making decisions about components or surfaces. You're not presented with a fait accompli on collection.

Time Spent Correctly

Our multi-day rate observation period before return is not standard practice across the industry. It adds to turnaround time. It also means the movement has been tested under realistic wear patterns, not just a bench test.

Documentation at Every Stage

Photographic records and written condition reports are produced for conservation work — a reference point for the owner and a useful record for the watch's long-term history.

Expertise

Depth, Not Breadth

Saujana Jam's founding watchmaker has spent over fifteen years working on mechanical movements. The workshop does not take on quartz battery replacements or jewellery work. This is a choice — to do one thing deeply rather than several things adequately.

That specialisation matters when a movement is complicated, when a vintage calibre requires period-appropriate lubrication choices, or when an inherited piece needs careful assessment before any work begins.

  • Mechanical and automatic calibres only
  • Swiss, German, and Japanese movement experience
  • Vintage references handled with conservation priority
  • Complication work assessed individually and honestly
  • Over 15 years of continuous horological practice
  • Staged ultrasonic cleaning in horological solvents
  • Regulation on professional multi-position timing equipment
  • Pressure testing following gasket renewal
  • Purpose-formulated watch lubricants, correct for each contact surface
  • Multi-day rate observation before return

Equipment & Method

The Right Tools, Used Correctly

Having professional equipment matters less than using it correctly. Ultrasonic cleaning is only as effective as the solvent choice and cycle timing. Timing machine results mean little without the subsequent multi-day observation that exposes rate behaviour under real conditions.

Our process is designed around what actually produces lasting results — not what produces the fastest turnaround or the most impressive-sounding list of steps.

Communication

No Surprises on Collection

We find that clients appreciate being informed at decision points — not presented with a completed job and a bill that differs from the original estimate. Our practice is to contact you before proceeding whenever the scope or cost changes materially from what was discussed at intake.

For conservation pieces in particular, choices about components, surfaces, and originality are made with the owner, not for them.

  • Written intake condition note before work begins
  • Contact before authorising additional cost or scope
  • Owner consulted on surface conservation decisions
  • Transparent timeline estimates at intake
  • Reply within one to two working days to enquiries

Pricing

Clear Pricing, Earned Value

Our service fees reflect the time required to carry out the work to a standard worth doing. They are not the lowest prices available in the market — nor are they the highest. We believe the work justifies the cost, and we'd rather explain that clearly than compete on price alone.

All prices are discussed and agreed at intake, before any work commences. There are no charges added on collection without prior contact.

Distinguishing Features

What Sets Our Workshop Apart

Conservation-First Approach to Vintage Pieces

For vintage and patinated references, we prioritise retaining original surfaces over cosmetic improvement. This matters for collectors and for long-term value. We discuss this preference with every owner before proceeding.

Long-Term Relationship with Each Watch

Several of our clients have brought the same watches to Saujana Jam across multiple service intervals. We retain records from previous visits, which informs how we approach current work and tracks how a movement is performing over time.

Walk-in Welcome, No Appointment Required

Our intake process doesn't require advance booking. Walk in during workshop hours and we'll assess the piece with you in person. Advance appointments are available for those who prefer them.

Referral When Appropriate, Not as a Last Resort

If a calibre falls outside what we handle to a high standard, we say so at assessment — not after opening the movement. We can usually point clients toward the right direction for their piece, without charge for the consultation.
